4 Cozy Texas Treehouses to Snuggle up in this Fall

September has arrived! It is hard to believe this month is finally here! Although the first day of fall is not until the end of the month (September 22nd), in my mind Fall is already here. With the arrival of this colorful season come some of my favorites things of all time including: relaxing rainy days, brisk sweater weather, the crackling of wood burning in the fireplace, scary stories and more! What better way to celebrate the arrival of Fall 2020 than by planning a fun and cozy staycation(ish) in a Texas Treehouse! Here are options I found on Airbnb that will allow you to escape the monotonous (and sometimes hectic) routines of life at home, so that you can focus on some of your favorite things during the Fall season.

The Treehouse on Lake Travis

While this quaint treehouse is great for the summer, we also thing it will be a fantastic place to relax during the Fall! For anyone with family that is in desperate need of spending some time away with a Birdseye view of Lake Travis, this is the place for you! The Treehouse juts out over the bluffs and among the trees on Lake Travis (near Austin). This awesome rental getaway can comfortably accommodate 4 guests; and includes some fun amenities including: a hot tub (which is looks out over the lake and is perfect for cooler days), a cozy fireplace, Park n’ Play/travel crib (for the very little ones), and amazing views of Lake Travis. Also if you are able to work remotely and you are looking to take an extended vacation, The Treehouse on Lake Travis had wifi and is available for long term rentals.

Southern Dream

Just a little over an hours drive East of Dallas, is luxurious treehouse that can fit up to five guests. However, this romantic little rental is best for couples or solo travel. Our favorite aspect of this of this cozy getaway is that it can perfectly accommodate the needs of any traveler. The Southern Dream has wifi, which is great for anyone who is wanting to log in for a little while and do a little bit of remote work during their getaway. Anyone who is looking to dive into local culture or do some shopping Canton is just a 10 minute drive away. For this Fall, the Canton Flea Market is open on the following days (Oct. 1-4, Oct. 29 – Nov. 1, and Dec. 3-6). Downtown Canton also has some fun attractions and restaurants. Or those who are looking to relax and truly escape, other features of this includes a private entrance, a hot tub, a patio/balcony, and a garden/backyard.

Ryders Treehouse

Ryders Treehouse is the the perfect place for any romantic couple that is wanting to get away from Dallas this Fall! What better why to relax than going out to West Texas and sharing some ghost stories or roasting marshmellows with your significant other on a secluded ranch! In fact, anyone who is planning a wedding during Covid and looking to go on a honeymoon should consider booking Ryders Treehouse. It is nestled away on a ranch near Baird, Texas (roughly 2 hour and 30 minute drive West of Dallas) and provides all the necessities that you need to relax. The treehouse itself is two stories, with the kitchenette on the first floor, and a bedroom/loft on the second floor. However, that is not all, other fun amenities of this treehouse include: indoor fireplace as well as an outdoor fire pit, fishing, Lake views, and a perfect perch for sipping wine as you watch the sun go down.

The Extraordinary Treehouse

When it comes to the essence of the Fall Season, we cannot think of a better place to spend your staycation than in the Extraordinary Treehouse. You do not have to go very far to enjoy a quiet cozy fire while also enjoying the lovely view of the forest scenery in the floor-to-ceiling windows of the living room. This stunning treehouse is two stories, a small foot bridge and gravel paths leading to the front door, and an over-sized Jacuzzi bathtub which is perfect for a warm bathe for two 😉 . For those who are looking to take a working staycation, wifi is included in this rental. While this treehouse can comfortably sleep four people, please note that the owners do have an age limit for their guests. They ask their guests are no younger than 27 years old. However, the owners will make exceptions depending on the inquiry.

5 Fun Places in The Colony that are Great for Family Activities

I have spent an overwhelming majority of my life living in Plano, Texas. But now, my Fiance has moved to The Colony (November 2019); and in July, I will be moving in with him as his wife. Over the 25 years of living in Plano, it has been amazing to see how my hometown has grown as well the areas surrounding it. Recently, I have decided to change the focus of my blogging so that I can learn more about Frisco, The Colony, and Plano and to share what I learn about this wonderful community that I will be moving to in six months. The more I learn about The Colony, the more amazing it is to see how this community grown significantly and has become very family oriented with many fun activities. Even though Matt and I do not have children yet, we are hoping to have a few children in the future. Here are some great places I found for anyone of all ages to visit (specially families with children).

Top Golf

There are so many fun and distracting things to do at TopGolf that we cannot possibly think of a better place to spend time with your family and friends. For the avid golfers in the group, there are about 13 golfing related games for you to play. These games include TopDrive, TopShot, and Quick 9. TopGolf also has other non-golfing games that member of your group can play; including billiards and fooseball. For those who are looking for a space to celebrate something such as a birthday or graduation, TopGolf provides packages starting at $44 per guest.

Lasertag – DFW

If you are worried about your little ones running around in a dimly lit area with special effect fog and flashing lights, worry no more! Lasertag – DFW is entirely outdoors and they have 22 acres that is divided into five different lasertag courses. That way you and your family have plenty of space to play and five different fields to choose from. Don’t worry about age, anyone ages 4 and up can participate in this fun activity! If you are looking to go with a larger group prices (10+ People) prices start at $160 and include one attendant and access to their picnic tables.

Truck Yard – The Colony

We love the Truck Yard in Dallas; which is why we were elated to learn that they have opened up another one closer to our home in The Colony. The Truck Yard is a great place for you and your family for many reasons. First, with the regular rotation of food trucks that are parked at the Truck Yard there is guaranteed to be a different selection of food every time you go. Another great reason to visit this awesome location is because it is the home of Barney Smith’s Toilet Seat Art Museum. The museum is full of toilet seats that have been turned into pieces of art work, which is bound to amuse the children. The final reason that your family is will love this eatery, is that there is plenty of room for your children to play around or dance to some of the live music from their featured artists.

Nature Trails

Nature trails are always fun and there are always new and exciting things for kids to learn while outside on nature trails. You and your family could go hiking or biking on nature trails. Or you could pack some picnic gear and have a picnic on the shoreline of Lake Lewisville. But no matter what you decide to do, there is only one thing about nature trails that we absolutely love: Nature Trails are 100% free! There is no admittance fee and you do not have to buy anything while you are there! There are a few Nature Trails here in The Colony, but Matt and I have three favorites. Be sure to try The Colony’s Shoreline Trail, The Colony Five Start Hike & Bike Trail, and the newest one (The Tribute Shoreline Trail).

The Shacks at Austin Ranch

In a nutshell, The Shacks at Austin Ranch are six eateries and a dog park all connected by a large patio. I love this location for many reasons. First, the entire family gets to go (of course when I say entire family, it means that your dog can join you on this outing). Another reason to love the Shacks, is the freedom to choose. If your family cannot decide on what to eat there are six different options that each family member can choose from. For those in the family who love Japanese ramen should try TEN Ramen. Mom and Dad can get adult beverages at Grrrowlers or coffee at Turbo. If anyone wants street tacos they can go to OMG Tacos. Tacklebox sells some great seafood; and Dirty Burger sells your favorite American Cuisine.

5 Bars in Frisco that are perfect for Parent’s Night Out

We all love our children and our families, but (let’s face it) there are times when we would like to get out of the house and have some time of our own. Whether you are going on a date night with your significant other or planning a girls’/guys’ night out with your friends, here are five great places right in Frisco that you should consider when making your next adults only plans.

Rare Books Bar

It is hard to believe that one of our favorite eras (the Roaring 20’s) was 100 years ago! Fortunately, right here in Frisco there is a really fun bar that is worth visiting (especially if you are a bourbon aficionado). The Rare Books Bar is a speakeasy that has an extensive selection of bourbon. Keeping true to the Roaring 20’s theme, this speakeasy has a “secret door” and requires a password prior to entry. Their weekly password is announced on their Instagram page. So be sure to follow so that you can keep up to date! While you are there, be sure to try our favorite cocktail the Whistlepig Old Fashioned. If you would like to add a little extra flair when visiting this bar, dress up in a Roaring 20’s costume when you go!

From the great location at the Star in Frisco, to the good food to the luxurious rooftop bar, there are many things to like about City Works. However, for the craft beer lover in your relationship, there are exactly 90 reasons to love City Works. This is be cause they have 90 local (or close to it) craft beers on tap. Plus, between the 1st and 2nd floor, they have over 200 taps pouring your favorite craft beers. While you are there, be sure to try the Velvet Hammer by Peticolas. It pairs well with the Smokehouse Burger, Filet Minon Sliders, and the Smoked BBQ Ribs.

Kelly’s Craft Tavern

If you and your group of adults are looking for something much more casual, Kelly’s Craft Tavern is a great place to go. They have more than 52 craft beers on tap that are changing seasonally; which is perfect for the person in your group who loves tasting new and different craft beer flavors. A couple great beers worth trying the is Lakewood Brewing Company’s The Temptress NITRO and the Strawberry Lager by Abita Brewing Company. These beers also pair well with the Chicken Fried Steak Fingers and the Frisco Joe (Sloppy).

Trophy Park Sports Lounge

Trophy Park Sports Lounge is a great place for you and your group of friends (or you and your significant other) are allowed to let out your inner child. There are so many fun options to choose from at this lounge. Of course the Trophy Park has some great dining and drink options; but they also have four bowling alleys, fooseball, bocce, arcade games booths, and more! But before your challenge your friends to a great game of bowling, make sure you sit down to eat! We suggest the Lobster Roll or the Pulled Pork entrees! If you are with a larger group, get the Whole King Crab for everyone to share!

Directions

Bottled in Bond

Photo Courtesy of Bottled in Bond

Named after the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, this awesome bar combines the best of vintage cocktails with some of the best modern sophisticated interior design. The absolute best time for you and your significant other to go is on Friday. Because on Friday, Bottled in Bond has live music from local artists including; Corina Grove and Caroline Milton. As you are listening to the live music you could be sipping on some of fun cocktails like the Whiskey Daisy or the Vieux Carre. Of course while drinking, you cannot forget about the finger food. Be sure to try the Glazed Bison Meatballs and the Navy Bean Hummus with your drinks!

8 Glamping Getaways Around Texas to Visit

The following article was first published on Dallasites 101 Blog. To read the complete article click here.

Glamping has become a fun and unique way to relax and enjoy nature but without the hassle and discomfort of traditional camping.  The term (“glamping”) was first coined in the United Kingdom in 2005 for luxurious, resort-like camping. And luckily, it was carried through to the US, with our own State of Texas offering some wonderful glamping spots that are perfect for a great solo trip or couples getaway. Here are 8 of our favorite!

EL COSMICO

The gold standard of glamping in Texas, and maybe the entire US, El Cosmico is a bucket-list getaway. From DIY Self Tent camping to renting updated trailers from the 1970’s, to Sioux-TeePee Rentals, Mongolian Yurt rentals, African Safari Tent Rentals, and even short-term apartment rentals, they have the perfect accommodations for any traveler with any level of “roughing-it” experience. And the flat, desert backdrop that is Marfa makes the entire experience unforgettable. You more than likely have seen this place on Instagram, or have heard of some of its sister hotels like the Hotel San Jose or Austin Motel, all owned by the Bunkhouse Group, that does an amazing job of curating unique and retro hospitality experiences.

El Cosmico also hosts the annual Trans-Pecos Festival of Music + Love, coming up on September 26-29 this year!

COLLECTIVE RETREATS: MONTESINO RANCH

The Collective Retreats is a national glamping brand aimed at offering romantic getaways for couples! And one of their locations is in the Hill Country at Montesino Ranch. For $750 per night, you can treat yourself and your significant other to some really fun treats; including a luxurious 60 minute in-tent couples massage, reservations for dinner at the on-site Farm-to-Table restaurant at the Three Peaks Lodge on your first night, along with several other romantic treats. The Collective Retreats also has other fun activities that are great for couples and include: Wine Tour Wimberly, Electric Bike Tours, and a “Beer, Brining & Branding Culinary Class” just to name a few.

GERONIMO CREEK RETREAT

Geronimo Creek Retreat is the perfect retreat for any group of friends looking for accomodations near New Braunfels. They have several options for sleeping accommodations including Treehouses, TeePees, Cabins, and the Homestead Haus. But we like the Treehouses best – they can fit up to eight people and have quick access to Geronimo Creek where guests have 24-hour access to the kayaks and paddleboards. Should the group decide to stay-in for the night, you can challenge your friends to a game of foosball or shuffleboard, or just hang out and have drinks by the firepit. If the group is going out, Schlitterbahn is a 24 minute drive and Gruene Hall is a 30 minute drive.

Courtesy of Walden Retreats

WALDEN RETREATS

With two large safari tents overlooking the beautiful Texas Hill Country and the Pedernales River, Walden Retreat is the perfect destination for any romantic couple looking for some much needed privacy. Each tent includes a King-Sized bed, Clawfoot Bathtub, an outdoor deck, a private fire pit, and several other luxurious amenities. If you and your significant other are looking for other activities during the day some fun activities we recommend the 290 Wines Trail, visiting Fredericksburg, and Garrison Brothers Bourbon.

SINYA ON LONE MAN CREEK

This is a great isolated glamping site with some wonderful amenities that make it feel like home. The lovely Safari-inspired getaway includes some wonderful features; including a hot tub, hammock, a stone patio, and fire pit. Also, if you are looking to go swimming during the hot summer months, Sinya is surprisingly close to some local swimming holes including Jacobs Well (16 minutes) and The Blue Hole (8 minutes).

Courtesy of Basecamp Terlingua

BASECAMP TERLINGUA

At least once in your lifetime, Basecamp Terlingua is a destination-must. They have several great options for sleeping accommodations, including cabins, tee-pees, and lotus tents. But we recommend the Bubbles. The Bubble is an inflated dome, where the top half or the dome is perfectly clear, allowing you and your travel partner to admire the rustic beauty of the West Texas desert by day or stargaze by night, all while lounging in a luxurious queen bed. And it is all for the price of $199 per night.

WAHWAHTAYSEE RESORT

Three beautifully designed safari tents are the perfect place to visit during the hot summer months because they have quick access to several beaches along the San Marcos River. Each “tent” is 650 square feet and includes all the luxurious amenities of home; including hardwood floors, fully equipped kitchenette, large indoor shower, and a luxurious king-sized bed. For activities guests have several options including visiting the 150 year old pecan orchard is within walking distance. Or if you would like to float the river, the Texas State Tube Rental is a 16 minute drive west.

Even though this business is based in Virginia, it was started by a Dallas native (Ginny Jacobs) and they ship their cookies all over the continental United States. Like many people during the pandemic Ginny, found herself at home and laid off. However, she was not going to let this define her. During her free time, she started baking lots of cookies! What makes each of these cookies fun, is that each one comes with a fun surprise cooked in the middle of them! For example, The PHATTY cookie is full of Nutella, The Parent Trap cookie contains Double Stuffed Oreos, and Nostalgia cookie is a PB&J in cookie form! These cookies are probably best for surprising your significant other while they are at work. For more information about this awesome business be sure to follow their Instagram!

This adorable little cookie shop in Frisco was started in 2018 by Marissa Allen and her husband (Retired 8 year NFL-Veteran) Jeff. Prior to going pro, Marissa enjoyed making cookies so much that she would often give away her sweet treats to anyone who would take them! Fast forwarding several years, Melissa has now started a business out of her passion and has hired bout 20 employees. Their business is now operating out of a store front in the Frisco Market Center neighborhood. The Cookie Society is best known for selling cookies that are deliciously chewy in the center and crunchy around the rim. They also sell some fun cookie flavors including: Banana Pubbing, Salted Caramel, and Cookie Butter; as well as some of our favorite flavors like Chocolate Chip and Sugar. Where to Stay While Honeymooning in French Polynesia

Prior to writing this article, Matt and I would like to send our special thanks to Rhonda who was our Travel Agent with Park Cities Travels. With the Covid pandemic, Matt and I had absolutely no idea where to start or what to do when the time came for us to start planning our Honeymoon. Rhonda was an excellent travel agent and has a worldwide network of resources (literally), she was such a huge help to us as we planned our trip. We highly recommend booking your next big trip through Rhonda at Park Cities Travels!

We started planning our wedding and our honeymoon prior to COVID-19 pandemic. Originally, our plans was to take a small trip a few days after the wedding and a BIG trip to New Zealand later in the year. Then the COVID pandemic arrived and like many things our hopes on going to New Zealand were thwarted. To further complicate our goals, many other countries (like New Zealand) had also closed their borders to tourists. At that point we were stuck in a quandary and did not know what to do or where to start. Our Travel Agent, Rhonda, was such a huge help. Once we finally decided where we wanted to go, we just gave Rhonda our final budget and she did all the rest. She booked our hotel, transportation, excursions, meal plans and more! What is better, is she also was able to meet all our needs and desires and still come up a few hundred dollars under budget!

InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa

The Lagoonarium

On the Island of Tahiti Nui, we stayed at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa. First, my absolute favorite feature of this resort was the Lagoonarium. This lagoonarium is an artificial (man-made) lagoon that is fed by sea water and is filled with some of the most colorful fish that are native to the area. So when you go to swim in the Lagoonarium, you are literally swimming with the stunning fish that are native to the area and some of the most beautiful coral in the world. I highly recommend bringing a snorkel and goggles when you visit the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, so that you can observe these sights as you swim! There are also two other swimming pools on the complex. One pool is right next to the Lagoonarium. Then there is a smaller infinity pool that overlooks the South Pacific and includes a swim up bar as well.

Overwater Bungalows

Two of the overwater Bungalows at the InterContinental Tahiti with a view of Moorea Island.

The InterContinental Resort & Spa in Tahiti does have amazing Overwater bungalows available to rent. They also have a few different types of Overwater Bungalows so that you can pick the perfect one for you. The smallest bungalows are called the Jr. Suite Overwater Bungalow Lagoon. the prices for these start at ~$520.00/night. This bungalow is a perfect location as it is right next door to the lagoonarium and has fantastic views of Mo’orea Island. However, if you are looking for an overwater bungalow that is a little more high end get the Overwater Motu Villa Suite. This suite can sleep up to 4 people and includes a balcony with stunning views, a luxurious bathtub, and is perfectly secluded. The price of Villas start at ~$650.00/night.

Early Check-In & Courtesy Rooms

It is also worth noting that most flights coming from the United States arrive in Papeete either early in the morning (ours arrived at 5:04 am) or late in the evening (around 09:00pm). Also the hotel is only about 10 to 15 minutes away from the airport. Therefore, if you are arriving early, be sure to request an early check in. The hotel does have courtesy rooms (which include toilets and showers) for their guests who arrive earlier than the check-in. I highly recommend making use of these courtesy rooms while you are waiting to check-in. These courtesy rooms include showers (with shampoo and bodywash), towels, toilets, and sinks. However, if you are arriving late. Check-in is a 3:00 pm. Be sure to call the front desk before you board you flight to Papeete and let them know that you will be arriving late in the evening.

Manava Beach Resort & Spa Hotel

Mo’orea Island

Image by VIRGINIE DUBOSCQ from Pixabay

Island as a whole reminded me of the French Polynesian version of a small sea side town in Florida, USA (like Seaside or Key West). While Tahiti Nui had more of an urban feel, Mo’orea was more quiet and felt more rustic. Due to the size and slower paced lifestyle of the island, Matt and I found the that we more and better access to beaches and the ocean. So if you wanted to go for a swim in the ocean, it was definitely much better.

Rooms and Bungalows:

Manava Spa and Resort (compared to the InterContentental Tahiti) was also smaller and and more quaint. However, Matt and I really enjoyed our time here! There are plenty of different styles of bungalows and rooms. While the Overwater bungalows seemed wonderful; they were not what Matt and I really wanted. We felt that they were a little too close to the other overwater bungalows around them. We also did not think that they gave us the privacy that we really wanted. With it being our honeymoon, Matt and I really needed something with much more privacy than what the Overwater bungalows could provide. Instead, we stayed in the Garden bungalow. These bungalows were fenced off and had a small private dunking pool. This bungalow ended up being everything that we needed it to be. If you are travelling with a family with kids, the Overwater and Beach Bungalows would be better suited for your needs. For couples definitely go with the garden bungalows during your stay.

Dinner and a Show

When booking your trip to Manava Beach Resort & Spa, be sure to make sure you are there on a Saturday night. Every Saturday night at 7:30 pm there is a show featuring Traditional Polynesian dancing! Dinner is included and but it is by reservation only! Make sure to be sure to make reservations as soon as you can for dinner on Saturday.

Paraoro, Mo’orea

In town there are a few restaurants Restaurants, a Tahitian Black Pearl shop and a small grocery store. Also if you are searching for a second home in a stunning destination there is a Sotheby’s Reality office just a five minute walk away from the Resort. Other souvenir shops are also in town.

Rainy Day on the Island of Tahiti Nui

The following photos were taken during my honeymoon to French Polynesia this past December. I will be writing another post talking all about this trip including itinerary and other details. But first I wanted to show you some of the incredible photos I was able to take while on the trip. In fact, these photos are so incredible that I did not even need to add any filters, presets, or other touch ups on Lightroom.

Christmas Gift Guide for the Couples in your Life

Christmas is only a few weeks away. But this year – with the Covid lockdowns, furloughs, and business closures – money is tighter than normal for many Americans. Of course we all want to show our loved ones we are thinking about them on Christmas, by giving them a gift but this is hard with a smaller budget. A great option that should help with your Christmas gift budget this year. Here are some of our favorite gifts that are perfect for any young couple in your life!

Chefs and Bakers

Acacia Gripperwood Cutting Board

Photo Courtesy of Bed Bath and Beyond

This was on our Wedding Registry and thankfully it was given to us during a bridal shower. I love this cutting for a few reasons. First, the wood is absolutely beautiful! In fact, when I am not using this cutting board, it is on display for guests to see. Another reason I love this board is because there are four rubber feet attached to the bottom. This keeps the board from moving around as I am using it. There are two sizes large (11″ X 14″) and small (8″ X 11″) and each cutting board is about 3/4″ thick. These cutting boards are definitely worth getting for that favorite couple in your life.

OXO Good Grips Vegetable Chopper

Photo Courtesy of Bed Bath and Beyond

This was a Christmas gift to Matt and I from my sister last year. While this might seem like an unusual gift idea; but, it is actually perfect. After putting this gift to use, I realized that the amount of time I spent in the kitchen is only be a fraction of what it once was. The amount of time that Matt and I spend on chopping the vegetables for dinner is significantly shorter than it was. All you need to do is cut the vegetable to the appropriate size, place it on the grate, and close the lid. Also a wonderful benefit to using this device is that your eyes will not get teary when you are chopping the onions.

Kitchen Aide Food Prep Attachment + Scraper Bowl Attachment

Photos Courtesy of Williams Sonoma

If this couple has a Kitchen Aide Mixer, these are great gifts for them. Let’s start with the Scraper Bowl Attachment. I currently have this attachment, it was one of the first purchases I made after receiving my mixer. It is a very useful attachment because I do not have to stop my mixer to clean up the sides of my bowl when I am making something. The scraper does this job for me. It also makes washing the bowl a little easier.

The Food Prep attachment is another great gift for anyone who spends a lot of time in the kitchen. While I do not have this gift myself, my parents have had this attachment for a long time. I have used this attachment to help grate cheese and some vegetables when I was still living with my parents. This is another gift that will tremendously help limiting the amount of time spent grating cheese by hand.

For the Couple that likes to Entertain

Personalized Cutting Board

Photos Courtesy of Naked Wood Works

(For clarification) these boards are not for regular everyday kitchen use. These boards are far too nice to use for as an actual cutting board. At the very least, these boards are great for kitchen décor. You can keep it on display on your countertop (or even the wall). If you do use them for anything, I would highly suggest using this only for a meat and cheese board the next time you have friends over.

Waterford Crystal Oversized Wine Glasses

Keep in mind this is just an idea, as Waterford Crystal has many different cuts and many different items that are perfect for gifting. Also it might be worth talking to the couple about what their favorite cut is. For me personally, the Lismore Essence cut is my favorite design and it matches all our other fine China. Nevertheless, Waterford Crystal is always a great gift for any couple that enjoys entertaining. Waterford Crystal is so beautiful and so classy, it will doe a perfect job at dressing up anyone’s dining table.

Cheese Board with Cloche

If you want to give your favorite couple a gift that is going to be used over and over again. This is the perfect gift to give them (especially if they are a couple that entertains on a routine basis). Cheese Boards are always super handy to have and can have multiple uses! The most obvious use of this item (of course) is for a meat and cheese board. It can also be used to serve other types of Hors d’oeuvres; such as: fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, meat for fondue. Or it can be used to hold a few dips.

For the Couple that Loves to Travel (or other fun Local Experiences)

CityPASS

Photo by Samson Katt on Pexels.com

The is a perfect for anyone loves to travel! CityPASS it is an excellent gift for several reasons. First, it is available in about 14 different cities on the North American continent including: Dallas, New York, Boston, and even Toronto. Each CityPASS give the holder “free” admissions into the 1 to 5 top attractions of that given city. For example, let’s say that you get the Dallas CityPASS. This pass will give this special couple admission to the Perot Museum, Reunion Tower GeO-Deck, Sixth Floor Museum, and Dallas Zoo OR the President George W. Bush Library and Museum. The CityPASS works differently for each city, so be sure to read about how the CityPASS works in that specific city you are purchasing.

ENO DoubleNest Hammocks + Hammock Accessories

I have a SingleNest Hammock. I purchased my hammock a few years before my husband and I even met. To this day it is one of my favorite travel accessories. First, the hammock and suspension system are specifically made for backpackers; therefore are really easy to pack into a carry on bag. For the couples who really enjoy outdoor adventures or long hikes, this is a great option because it allows your favorite couple a great place to relax, swing, drink, and watch the sunset.

Large Reusable Tumbler/Water Bottle

Photos Courtesy of Brumate

Reusable water bottles are other wonderfully useful items (even for when we are not traveling). They are always really nice to have in just about any situation. They can be used when working out. I bring them to work. With traveling (domestically) these are always great to have because you do not have to buy water or water bottles as most establishments will have a water fountain which can be used for refilling their water bottle.

Other Fun Experiences for Couples

Kombucha Starter Kit

Something needs to be said about couples that make it a point to learn useful ways to be resourceful and self-reliant. If this special couple in your life really likes Kombucha, this is a great gift for them! For those who do not know, Kombucha is fermented black tea (<0.5% alcohol). However, it is also a good-for-you drink because it is so full of probiotics and bacteria that is really good for your gut! Granted, Kombucha can be purchased at the grocery store. But it can definitely be more on the expensive side. So for anyone you know that likes kombucha. This is a great opportunity for them to make their own. Making a good brew of Kombucha takes very little effort and will be super helpful on their checkbook as well.

Home Beer Brewing Kit or Wine Brewing Kit

This is another great way for anyone to learn to be resourceful and self-reliant. It is also fantastic for any couple that loves beer or wine. With people needing to stay home during the Covid pandemic, this might help with cabin fever and limiting public exposure. Anyway, (like the Kombucha) buying your friends a DIY Beer or Wine kit should also help with keeping costs down at the store.

Murder Mystery Dinner Show

Photo by Askar Abayev on Pexels.com

If you are really looking for a unique and creative gift, this is a fun idea! It is a really good, 4-course dinner paired with a fun activity! During a Murder Mystery Dinner, you are guided (by actors) through a engaging whodunit! As the participants they will be able to interact with those they are sharing dinner with and it would allow them to make new friends.

Meaningful Ways to be Intentional About Your Relationships this Holiday Season

Relationships and leading an intentional life is a topic that I love discussing. Sadly, it is not a topic that is discussed enough on this blog. With the Holidays quickly approaching and the P(l)andemic taking its toll on everyone, I felt that writing a post about being purposeful with our relationships would would be welcomed. Because, after all, it is very important that we do not forget our loved ones during the 2020 Holiday Season. Whether you are trying to social distance or not during this Holiday Season, I have done my best to include activities that are great for both social distancing or in-person activities. These are some fun ways that I plan on being intentional about all the meaningful relationships in my life this season.

Sending Handwritten Notes

For clarification purposes, I am not talking about going out and buying a Hallmark card then adding a nice little hand written diddy in the me margins. Instead, buy a unique and personalized stationery. A stationery is a personalized paper collection consisting of a blank card, matching envelopes, and (sometimes) writing utensils. If you are looking to buy a stationary, I have included some great resources below. Or if you do not want to buy anything, just use a some of your favorite pens and pencils; in some ways, this is more creative because you can get in-touch with your creative side and draw them a picture. It does not matter what route you choose to go; but when you do write your letter to your friends and relatives, be sure to tell them you have been thinking about them and wanted to know how they were doing.

Bake Them Something From Scratch (just because)

this is easily one of my favorite things on the list, simply because I love to cook. Although, I am a little biased as I have been cooking since I was 12 years old. Some of the most meaningful time I have ever spent in my life is spending time in the kitchen cooking food for others. Of course, 2020 has inadvertently turned most people into better cooks with the Covid19 lockdowns. Why not show your family, friends, and neighbors you are thinking about them by with your newly improved baking skills? Your baking options are endless. You could make cookies, a casserole, brownies, or even make them drinks. I have quite a few favorite recipes that I like. Here are some of my favorites:

Banana Cake or Banana Bread (My favorite recipe is from the Forum Feasts Cookbook … no nuts)

Skillet Cookie

Scooter’s Spaghetti Casserole

Chicken Spaghetti

Game Night

Game night is another personal favorite of mine. Games have a wonderful way of making people laugh. Laughter is key, when it comes to bringing people together. It has an amazing way of making you feel like you have a connection with the people you are sharing your evening with. At the end the night, you will feel like you have a deeper bond with those in you family or in your circle of friends. This is why game night is so important! In a time full of uncertainty, make sure that you set time aside with your family or friends to have a game night. Depending on your group here are some fun game night options:

After Dark (Adults Only)

Cards Against Humanity

Telestrations – After Dark Edition

Madd Libs

Five Crowns

Pandemic (See what I did there 😉 )

Family Games

Madd Libs (Yes, this is great for kids too. So long as everyone keeps it G-Rated)

Turn your Family Room into a Cozy Theater

Photo from Pinterest

There are so many fun ways to have a movie night with your loved ones! For those who have a media room, this is a great way to use it. A regular Television is always a great option (especially when it is right next to you fireplace). Another fun option is take a small portable projector point it a blank wall and watch your movie that way! No matter what room you decide to have your movie night in, make sure that you gather all your favorite blankets, favorite snacks, and fluffy pillows. Make it a cozy night, that will be worth reminiscing on in the years to come.

5 Spooktacular Date Night Ideas for Those Who Live North of I-635

Whether it is sharing scary stories while sitting around a fire, the cooler weather, or throwing a fun costume party for Halloween; there are so many fun reasons to enjoy the month of October! Of course, none of these things can be enjoyed alone. This scary October moments simply must be shared with a close friend or a significant other. Getting a great scary adrenaline rush with my husband, is easily one of my favorite things to do, especially in the month of October. Here are some of my favorite “spooktacular” night ideas during the Halloween Season.

Nightly Spirits Tour – Haunted Bar Crawl

Photo by Tim Durgan on Pexels.com

Yes, this bar crawl is based in Downtown Dallas. However, it was too perfect of a topic to not be included in this post. It does not matter if you are a believer in the supernatural or not. This Ghostly tour is perfect for anyone and everyone who is looking to meet new people, spend time with your significant other/friends, learn more about the great city of Dallas and grab a few great drinks at the same time. The tour starts a the Green Door Public House on the weekends and makes a couple stops at the Harwood Tavern and City Tavern. Your tour will be guided by a few local ghost hunters who provide extensive knowledge regarding the history of the local sites as well as some witnessed occurrences in the local bars. For those who need more proof of the supernatural or if you would like to add some more entertainment to your tour, bring an an audio recorder with you to see if you can catch an EVP!

Haunted Shadows Lake Trail

Photo Courtesy of Haunted Shadows Lake Trail

This is a perfect date night idea for those who live in Southwest Frisco or in The Colony, especially because it is so close to home! This mile long trail is not for the faint of heart though. Along your hike, you will find you are not alone. During your date, you will be joined by creepy clowns, disturbing shadow people, disembodied voices, and unexplained sounds or noises. This heavily wooded trail is follows the shoreline of Lake Lewisville and is only lit by the moon. A great way to add some fear factor to the trail is to go on a night when there is a new moon.

Dark Hour Haunted House (Backstage Tours)

We were deeply saddened to hear that Covid-19 has prevented Dark Hour from opening its doors this Halloween Season. Especially since it is one of the best Haunted Houses in this region of the United States. While normally we would encourage those who are terrified of haunted houses to stay far away from this attraction. But that is not the case for COVID-19 conditions. This year, we highly encourage anyone (especially those who do not like to go to haunted houses) to take part in a unique experience that Dark Hour staff is providing. In Lieu of having regular shows, Dark Hour is providing backstage tours for anyone to see. This is a great alternative for those who would normally be unable to tolerate haunted houses to see the “science” behinds some of our favorite jump scares.

Netflix, Fire in the Fireplace, and Chill

This date night idea is absolutely perfect for any couple that is just wanting to spend a quiet night in. If you are looking for ways to save money or avoid exposure to Covid-19 this is a great alternative to a “normal” night out. Also unlike the other date nights, this date will actually allow you to set your own private fire and snuggling up next to your significant other. Netflix is one of the best options for scary movies/TV shows this time of year. Some of my favorite Netflix shows include: The Silence of the Lambs, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Haunting of Bly Manor. Of course, if you are looking for something different or if you do not have a Netflix subscription definitely check out the Top 5s Channel on YouTube.

Create your own Ghost Hunting Adventure

Photo by Jack Gittoes on Pexels.com

Texas (the state) is nearly 200 years old. But the history of the land is far older than the state itself. With all of its history, there are plenty of haunted buildings and locations in the area today. We cannot think of a more enjoyable way to discover the area than by going, finding and exploring some of these locations on your own. There are a few fun ghost towns and legitimately haunted locations in the area. But we recommend going to the Ghost Town of Preston (about an hour North), the Ghost Town of Elizabethtown (about an hour West), or visiting the Haunted Princeton Cemetery. Even if you do not find any ghosts, it can give you and your significant other a great story to share in the future. But if you would like to see if there are any ghosts, bring an audio recorder or an infrared camera to see if there is anything lurking about the area.

What to do with 24 Hours in Washington D.C.

My husband is a pilot for a commercial airline. While there are many benefits to his job, one of my favorites is being able to travel so that I can meet him in for some of his longer layovers in a few American cities. I love traveling and seeing local sites and I love getting to be with my husband. I have been to Washington DC twice (once on a solo trip and once with Matt), it is a wonderful city to visit for anyone and for any reason.

Granted travel restrictions are continuously changing on a daily basis. Unfortunately, those traveling from Texas (as well as 30 other states) will need to quarantine for 14 days after their arrival. Just know, that this will not last forever, I fully suspect that Washington DC to completely open up soon. However, if you are traveling from Maryland or Virginia you are exempt from the order.

Union Station

Granted, Washington DC is best known for being our nations capital. DC has many beautiful site and many beautiful government buildings. However, it would probably surprise most people that one of the prettiest buildings in the city is not a government building at all. Union Station is one of the prettiest buildings in Washington DC. It is open to the public (as opposed to just Amtrak and Metro Passengers) there are quite a few shops and restaurants to try including: Magnolia Bakery, Potbelly, Aloha Poke Co., Blue Bottle Coffee, and more. The best way to get there is to take the Metro subway.

Hiking in Rock Creek Park

Funny story, my discovery of this park was purely accidental. The first time I went to Washington DC was a solo trip. I had some time to kill between checking out of the hostel and arriving at the train station to depart the city. So I rented a car and drove around. At the time, I had no direction and no map, I just decided to take my self on a self-guided driving tour of Washington DC. It was during this driving tour that I stumbled upon this lovely park. This is a great location to get out and enjoy the beauty of nature.

It does not matter what you plan on doing, the National Mall is a great place to visit! Of course, if you have never been to the the nation’s capital definitely take advantage of all the free tourist attractions that are there (because there are so many)! If you are traveling with a group of people, this is a great place to do something that will ignite the excitement in every member. For those who love history, you can enjoy any one of the government buildings, monuments, or memorials. The foodie in your group might really enjoy the tons of food trucks and restaurants within walking distance. You could have a picnic on the lawn for the calm, introverted, nature-lover in the group. For the person who wants to dive into culture, there is no better place to go than the Smithsonian Museum.

Stay the Night at Highroad Hostel DC

Yes, I realize this is a Hostel and not your typical hotel. However, compared to some of my hotel stays in Washington DC, I enjoyed the Highroad Hostel far more. First off, this hostel is located in a really fun DC neighborhood (Adams Morgan). There are so many fun quirky shops, restaurants, and bars all within a two-block walking distance. Some of these shops and restaurants include: the Amsterdam Falafelshop, Bossa, District of Columbia Arts Center, and Mercedes Bien Vintage Clothing and Decor. Also if you are looking for a cheap ride to drive around Washington DC, there is a Zipcar Parking lot right around the corner (not even a 5 minute walk). Finally, there are several different room options for travelers. For anyone who just wants a cheap place to crash, I would recommend the 14 bed-multi shared dorm. If anyone is traveling with a group or with their children, I highly recommend the 4 bed multi-shared room.

Eat at The Hamilton

The Hamilton is a beautiful restaurant and live music venue on the corner of 14th St. and F St. NW. Fortunately, even with the Covid restrictions, The Hamilton is allowed to have live concerts (just at a reduced capacity). In the coming weeks and months patrons will be able to enjoy live music with their dinner. This fall season they have some really fun concert options to the public, including: Della Mae, Kat Edmonson, Cris Jacobs Band, and a few more. Otherwise, if you are just looking for a great place to eat, The Hamilton offers dine-in, take-out, online, and to-go orders. While you are there, be sure to try the Lobster Shephard’s Pie, No Bull Burger (vegan), or Fire Cracker Sushi Roll.

Espionage has always been a topic from some of our favorite movies, novels, TV shows and even conspiracy theories. Some young children dream of eventually becoming International spies. This museum is perfect for any child (and even children at heart) because it provides their visitors with an immersive and semi-hands on experience regarding espionage. During your visit you will get the chance to learn all about the Culper Spy Ring, the Code Breakers of WWII, the Enigma, and more. The International Spy Museum is open Monday through Friday (even during Covid). They also have some fun programs and workshops for their patrons. For families, they have other fun events including the “Covert Couch Challenge” which is a family game night designed to test your family’s skills at tradecraft.
